ESCi - GiGa

Fenix Partner

ESCi (School of International Trade) was created in 1993 from an initiative of the Catalan Government. It is a University centre assigned to the Pompeu Fabra University. It has a well experienced team on Integrated Product Policy and Life Cycle Management (IPP/LCM) issues, as well as a very important knowledge on marketing and trade. Finally, it is deeply connected to Government, SMEs associations in Spain and Catalonia region and international bodies.

GiGa is the Environmental Management Research Group within the International School of Trade (ESCI-UPF), and works with those issues related to product and the environment. GiGa aims to develop and transmit knowledge about sustainability that can help organisations in their internationalisation models. GiGa coordinates the FENIX project and participates as a partner in the HAproWINE project within the same European LIFE+ Programme.

Created in 2002, GiGa has worked in several international and national projects related to LCA, ecodesign and environmental product communication. GiGa’s Director, Dr. Pere Fullana i Palmer, has been Chair of the SETAC Life Cycle Assessment Committee (LCA) in Europe, and is the Spanish representative for the ISO 14040 series of norms related to the LCA of products, as well as the CEN/TC 261/SC 4/WG 1/TG 1 LCA packaging.

Main activities:

The research areas are based on applying the life cycle concept and on integrating the three pillars of sustainability. The solutions offered must hence be compatible with the demands of the market, social expectations and respect towards the environment. GiGa is also able to transmit these solutions so that they are taken into consideration in the decision-making processes of organisations. GiGa (ESCI-UPF) is member of the UNEP-SETAC Life Cycle Initiative and also leads the Ecoembes Packaging Life Cycle Observatory.

Role in the project:

Within the FENIX project, ESCI is responsible of coordinating and managing the overall project and the different activities to be undertaken by the project partners and its collaborators. ESCi will guide and coordinate data search and modelling, and it will be under its responsibility to define the common framework and guidelines to perform all the models created in the GaBi software in order to guarantee their consistency, and also to define the user’s requirements. ESCI will be responsible for the definition of the models and the selection of the technologies to be included in the software and for the good performance of the final result.
