SOCIEDADE PONTO VERDE (SPV), is a non-profit-making company with the mission to promote the selective collection, take-back and recycling of packaging waste in Portugal, in order to guarantee the achievement of the recycling and recovery targets defined in the packaging Portuguese Law. SPV manages the Portuguese Green Dot System.

According to the EU legislation transposed into the Portuguese law, economic operators placing packaging on the market are responsible for the management and final disposal of packaging waste. However, this responsibility can, by law, be transferred to a properly licensed entity.The mission of SPV is, on behalf of packers, fillers, importers, manufacturers of packaging and packaging materials and distributors, to organise and manage the take-back and recovery of packaging through the integrated system for the management of packaging waste (SIGRE), also known as the Green Dot system. SPV set up the Integrated System for Packaging Waste Management (SIGRE) in order to fulfill its legal and environmental obligations through the organisation and management of a circuit guaranteeing the take-back, recovery and recycling of non-reusable packaging waste.The SIGRE is based on the articulation of responsibilities and processes among a number of partners. It is designed to recover and recycle packaging waste and help reduce the volume of waste disposed in landfills.

Main activities:

To support local authorities in the selective collection and non-reusable packaging waste sorting programmes;
To guarantee the take-back, recovery and recycling of sorted waste under its contracts with manufacturers of packaging and packaging waste (paper and cardboard, glass, plastic, wood, and steel and aluminium);
To manage the final disposal of non-reusable packaging placed on the Portuguese market by packers, fillers and importers, after consumption; To guarantee to distributors that their non-reusable packaging is covered by an Integrated System for Packaging Waste Management (SIGRE);
To promote consumer awareness and environmental education; To support research programmes fostering the development of the market for recycled products and materials.

Role in the project:

In the FENIX Project, SPV is an important partner that will be directly involved in almost all the tasks or as information facilitator. SPV will facilitate its own data on waste collection, transportation and recovery to create the models. SPV will have an important role when selecting waste recovery and treatment options, and will also be able to use the final software for the daily work but and for future decision-making processes. Thus, SPV will be able to decide, for instance, the best emplacement of a new plant or the allocation of waste fractions into different waste treatment plants or technologies.

SPV will facilitate the contact with its members and stakeholders in the collection of waste treatment and recycling data.
Municipalities from Portuguese regions will use the tool, specially because it will be flexible to change specific waste treatment parameters of other emplacements at European level. The tool will be available from SPV’s website. SPV and ECOEMBES will be responsible for Action 9 - Transferability basis, where they will assess the transferring of knowledge of the FENIX project into an Eastern European Country.
